South Coast Sigma 33 Team Wins Patriot Cup

Post by Andy Johns » Tue Sep 08, 2009 9:00 am

The 2009 Patriot’s Cup invitational event was won by the South Coast Sigma team for the first time in the event’s history (well we think so anyway  ). Two excellent days of racing were organised by the Royal Alfred Y.C. and the Royal Irish Y.C in Dublin Bay over the weekend of 5/6 September.

The Patriots Cup is a 2 boat team racing event; this year sailed in equalised Cork 1720s. Despite a forecast of 30+ knots for Sunday, the wind gods smiled on us and we managed two complete days of racing and three round-robins.

Racing was extremely close with mark-traps, protests and penalties galore. Many thanks must go to the expert team of international umpires who were on hand to dish out the red flags and keep order on the water – an unenviable task at the best of times.

After several extremely close races, it was the Sigma team that came out as convincing winners with 11 wins from 12. The only race they dropped went to Royal St George who finished in second place with 7 wins, closely followed by Royal Alfred and Lough Dergs on 6 wins each.

As well as organising a wonderful event with superb hospitality and a memorable dinner(for those whose memories weren’t too clouded the next morning), the Royal Irish Y.C also fielded a team that pushed all of their opponents to the wire and were unfortunate not to come away with any victories.

All of the teams are already looking forward to an even stronger event next year when we hope to see the return of the Scottish Sigma's and Royal Thames teams that were unable to make the trip this time.

Final Results:

1st South Coast Sigmas, Matt Greenfield & David Newey, 11-1
2nd Royal St. George Y.C, Sam Hunt and Marty O'Leary, 7-5
3rd Royal Alfred Y.C, Tim Goodbody Sr & John Sheehy, 6-6
4th Lough Dergs Y.C, Stefan Hyde & Peter Bayly, 6-6
5th Royal Irish Y.C, 0-12
