Post by Donald McLaren » Wed Jan 08, 2014 2:13 pm

This great race is usually one of the first of the season – first weekend in May – Bank Holiday Weekend - Sunday 4th May.

There is a dedicated SIGMA CUP, well contested by Sigmas from the Irish Sea. Serious territory of SEA PIE OF CULTRA – boat to be challenged in 2014!

[I suppose we had better have another go.] We look forward to welcoming all entrants especially Sigmas. With a late start due to the tides, it should be possible to enjoy the Saturday night options in Ramsey to the full and still make the start at around 1400 hrs. A night finish is likely. All the best from Sea-Pie.

Round the IOM race 2014 is history now.

5 Sigmas entered but only 3 made it to the start line.

Sea Pie of Cultra, Pippa 4 and Polished Manx started race in what proved to be great race. Conditions were "right" for Sigmas, light winds to start with, followed by 22-25 Kts SE "on the nose" on the west coast and and different conditions for different boats on the East Coast.

Jerry (Sea Pie) had brilliant start - kite went up bang on time, followed by Kuba (Polished Manx) who had 10 seconds delay as spinnaker bag did not open. Grant (Pippa 4) was the 3rd Sigma to start only seconds behind Polished Manx.

Sea Pie's 10 seconds in front proved to be crucial for the whole race. Conditions at the start line were very fluky and Jerry's ability to read them gave Sea Pie huge advantage they would not let go for the next 12 hours.

Sea Pie made it first to the Point of Ayre, where kites went down and boats started 7-8 hours beat into the SE fresh breeze. No.2 and mains reefed saw boats tacking frequently.

Sea Pie arrived at Calf Of Man / Chicken Rock gate 30 min before Polished Manx and 45 before Pippa 4.

Then first boat was able to hoist kite again and sail into rather calmer waters East of IOM. Polished Manx wasn't so lucky and although enjoying good fetch could not hoist.

At this stage Pippa 4 decided to call it a day and retired - they had long way back home to Dublin via Holyhead, with 7 B predicted "later".

Sea Pie completed race in 11:30:58 followed by Polished Manx 12:31:54 - Massive win for Sea Pie of Cultra who won:

First over the line
First overall
First in One Design
First in Division I Class A
