Sigma 33 OOD South Coast Newsletter Spring 2014

With the days getting longer and hopefully warmer, the sailing season has already started for some, while others are still grappling with winter maintenance. But no excuses accepted for not being ready for our first event – the David Thomas Regatta, with two races on Saturday 10th May.
We’re delighted to announce that Toby Gorman has agreed to be our new South Coast Captain. Toby raced a Sigma 33 with his father in the early ‘90s before migrating to Impalas and Hunters. We welcome him back into the fleet and have every expectation that, given his results to date in the Winter and Spring series, he will be difficult to beat in ‘Stan the Boat’. Thanks go to our outgoing Captain, Richard Puddifoot, for all his work over the past two years. Richard led from the front (literally) and although Whippa is now up for sale we hope we might see something of her on the water before he sells. Incidentally, Whippa Snappa is a great boat so please mention to friends and acquaintances who might be looking to buy a thoroughbred racing yacht!
We would also like to formally welcome Keith Greenfield to the fleet. Keith entered ‘Sibilation’ into the RTI Race last year and a good source tells us that he has been quietly learning the ropes since! We hope to see Sibilation on the start line for some Sigma racing this year.
A big welcome also to David Sanger who is bringing Irish boat ‘Blues’ back to the Solent. ‘Blues’ has an excellent track record in Ireland and we look forward to seeing this extended in the Solent!

The Class has put together the following sailing programme for 2014:

10 May David Thomas Regatta which is being run by the Royal Southern YC. Saturday racing only (two races) with a ‘sail past’ in front of David Thomas on Sunday 11th. A notice from the organisers is attached for your information. It would be great if we could have good support for this event as we were one of the first classes designed by David Thomas. Please
register direct with the Club. www.royal-southern.co.uk

14th June The Royal Corinthian YC in Cowes is running the first of our proper One Day Regattas when there will be running two races from the shoreline with the first race having a warning signal at 1020.

21st June Island SC Round the Island Race. Please enter direct with the ISC.

29th June Royal Southampton Nab Tower Double. The class has been supporting this race for a number of years and we are hoping for a good entry. Please enter direct with the Club.

12th July The second of the One Day Regattas which is being run by the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club and there will be once again be running two races from the shoreline .

2nd – 9th August AAM Cowes Week. Please enter with the organisers direct . We need a good turn-out this year if we are to keep our own start. If you can’t do the whole week please consider entering the first Saturday and/or Sunday - it is incredibly important for the Class to have entry numbers bolstered and could make all the difference. The Class will also be organising pontoon berthing at the Whitegates Pontoons. If you wish to take up the berthing please let our Secretary know who will send you the details when received.

27th September The final One Day Regatta run by the Royal Corinthian takes place on the Saturday and will follow the usual format. On the Sunday the Club is running a Round the Cans Race as part of the IRC Solent Series. All are invited to take part in this event but the Sunday races will not form part of the Class Championship.
We do hope that all members will support these events. If anyone has any questions or requires information please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Committee which for this season comprises:

Toby Gorman (South Coast Captain) 07818 083329 H: 01342 870255
Jeff Worboys 07712 899615 H: 020 8340 9055

Richard Puddifoot 07500 086278
