Grey skies and cold, light north easterly winds got the official 2010 programme off to a less than summery start on Saturday. Six 33s made the RCYC start line for two round the cans races organised by the Cowes Corinthian YC.
Workout came off the line to lead the fleet up the first leg but it was Richard Puddifoot’s Whippa Snappa benefiting from some fresher breeze to windward who rounded first. A couple of shifts later and with better boat speed it was Johns/Rolfe’s Shadowfax who challenged and then overhauled Whippa establishing a good lead by the windward mark. Both boats hoisted with a spinnaker wrap but Shadowfax’s proved the more stubborn allowing Whippa to take the lead once again which she held for the rest of the race.
With the tide on the turn, the second race was led from the start by Whippa Snappa. David Crawforth’s Sigress and John Dallimore’s Heritage were never far off the pace and for the last two legs of the race were tussling for third place. However Shadowfax, having separated from the fleet at the beginning of the second windward leg, eventually overhauled Heritage but failed to catch Sigress who held on to third place behind Workout and Whippa Snappa.
Good courses and predictably shifty NE winds made for a suitably challenging first outing of the season with precious little separating the fleet. Relatively benign conditions meant the new faces which could be seen on most boats had a soft introduction to proceedings. In taking the Lucent Trophy, Whippa starts the season with the same consistency (and crew!) that she held through most of 2009 making her the boat to beat in 2010.
